Carry-on-only trips

Fly with the bag you can walk away with.

Compare budget-airline carry-on-only fares, paid overhead bags and full-service long-haul allowances before you book. A 7kg airline and a 14kg airline can feel like different planets when you are doing a multi-city trip.

Airport baggage carousel with luggage
Fast exits

No bag carousel

Walk off the aircraft and keep moving. This matters on tight connections, late arrivals, work trips and short stopovers.

Lower risk

No lost checked bag

Medication, chargers, documents, work gear and a change of clothes stay with you. If a checked bag takes four days to turn up after a two-day trip, the damage is already done.

Price trap

Maybe cheaper, maybe not

Airlines should probably reward people who use less hold space. Instead, some fares charge for checked bags and some now charge for the overhead locker. The cheapest fare can be the wrong fare.

Booking shortcut

Open an Expedia flight search, then check baggage before payment.

Expedia can show flight options quickly, but baggage conditions still belong to the airline and fare family. Use this as a launch pad, then read the fare rules and baggage line on the checkout path.

Under-seat vs overhead

The small bag is not the same as a cabin bag.

Airlines increasingly split cabin baggage into two products. The free item may be only a small under-seat bag. The overhead wheelie bag may be included, included only with a higher fare, or sold as priority boarding, large cabin bag, trolley bag or extra carry-on.

Under-seat: usually laptop bag, handbag or small backpack Overhead: wheelie bag or larger backpack, sometimes paid Weight: common caps include 7kg, 8kg, 10kg, 14kg and 15kg Enforcement: strictest on low-cost, full flights and smaller aircraft

Budget airlines

Carry-on-only is most real on low-cost fares.

Jetstar, AirAsia, Scoot, Cebu Pacific, VietJet, Ryanair, easyJet, Wizz, Vueling, Pegasus, Spirit and Frontier are the natural market for this. Long-haul full-service economy often includes checked baggage anyway, but budget carriers commonly make checked bags and sometimes overhead cabin bags separate paid choices. For travellers who genuinely can pack light, that can save a lot of money, especially if they are willing to accept narrower seats, no free meal, basic service and paid extras.

Base fare

Check whether it is under-seat only

The cheapest fare may include only a small personal item. A normal wheelie bag can be sold as priority, large cabin bag, trolley bag, carry-on bag or bundle.

Savings

Do not buy baggage you will not use

On budget airlines, skipping checked baggage can be the difference between a cheap trip and a fare that quietly doubles through add-ons, especially for couples, families and multi-city routes.

Trade-off

The fare is cheap because the comfort is stripped back

Many travellers will accept tighter seats, no checked bag, no included meal, limited flexibility and paid seat choice when the cash saving matters more than the onboard experience.

7kg trap

Asia-Pacific budget airlines weigh cabin bags

Jetstar, AirAsia, VietJet, Cebu Pacific and IndiGo are all built around strict 7kg-style cabin limits. Buy extra before the airport if the itinerary needs it.

Europe

Personal item fares are common

Ryanair, Wizz, Vueling, easyJet and Pegasus can separate the under-seat bag from the overhead bag. The add-on can matter more than the headline fare.

US budget

Personal item included, carry-on paid

Spirit and Frontier are useful comparisons because the base fare can be personal-item-only, with the overhead carry-on sold separately or bundled.

Examples worldwide

There are hundreds, so start with the model.

The exact airline list changes by region, merger and route. The important check is whether the cheapest fare includes under-seat only, overhead cabin bag, checked baggage, meals and seat selection.

7kg plan

Pack for the strictest airline first

If any segment is 7kg, build the whole itinerary around 7kg unless you are willing to pay or check a bag at the gate.

Overhead plan

Buy the overhead bag early

On Ryanair, Wizz, easyJet-style models, a wheelie bag can be an add-on. It is usually cleaner to add it before the airport.

Multi-trip plan

Choose the simplest operating airline

For multiple tickets, one strict low-cost sector can break the whole packing plan. The operating airline rule wins.

Gate plan

Assume enforcement can happen

Weights and sizers are used unevenly. Full flights, small aircraft and late boarding groups make gate checks more likely.

Business class, no checked bag

Odd? Yes. Useful? Very.

Business passengers often have more cabin allowance and priority boarding, so a carry-on-only trip can be smoother: board early, keep the bag near you, leave the airport quickly and skip baggage priority roulette. It is especially rational on quick work trips where the real cost is time at the other end: waiting at the carousel, dealing with a delayed bag, missing a meeting, or stopping at the hotel before going where you actually need to be.

The lie-flat traveller is a real category: someone may want a flat bed, lounge access and sleep on a long sector, but still only need a small bag for a two-day meeting. They are paying for rest and speed, not for 60kg of checked luggage.

A premium passenger who does not use 40-60kg of checked baggage is also saving aircraft weight, handling time and lost-bag risk. Airlines could encourage that more. In practice, premium fares are already much more expensive, so airlines may not feel the need to discount a passenger who travels light.

Suitcase on an airport scale

The missing fare

Carry-on-only should be a cleaner fare type.

There is a real case for a fare that says: no checked bag, guaranteed overhead space, clear cabin weight, fast exit. Instead, travellers often have to decode Basic, Light, Saver, Priority, large cabin bag and bundled fare names.

Premium

Reward the light business traveller

Many premium flyers care more about time than allowance. A carry-on-only premium fare could trade unused checked bags for clarity, boarding certainty or a small credit.

Lie-flat

Buy the bed, skip the baggage claim

A long overnight sector can justify business class for sleep, even when the trip only needs one carry-on. The product is the bed, schedule and arrival condition.

Market

This is a big travel segment

Quick business trips, two-day visits, consulting, sales calls, conferences, government travel, medical meetings and multi-city work weeks all suit carry-on-only travel. Airlines could target this market much more clearly.

Economy

Do not hide the overhead fee

If the overhead locker costs extra, show it before the fare looks cheap. Under-seat-only is a different product from a normal cabin bag.

Airline

Less weight, fewer bag failures

Checked bags need belts, carts, loading, unloading, tracing and claims when things go wrong. Light travel reduces more than just fuel, and it avoids the four-day delayed-bag problem on a trip that is already finished.

Traveller

Price the whole journey

Compare base fare, overhead add-on, checked-bag fee, connection risk, hotel laundry and the value of walking straight out at arrival with your laptop, charger and meeting clothes already with you.

Two days

One overnight should not need a checked bag

For a two-day trip, the sensible kit is often laptop, charger, medicines, toiletries within liquid limits, one spare shirt or outfit and the clothes you are wearing.

14kg

Plenty for the serious quick trip

Fourteen kilos can cover laptop, chargers, medicines, toiletries, sleepwear, spare shoes if needed and a clean change of clothes. Many frequent travellers already do this on short premium trips.
